Dr Anthony Croft is a Queensland and Oxford trained gastroenterologist with a passion for providing world-class medical care to fellow Queenslanders. He is a general gastroenterologist and specialist inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) physician with national and international recognition in the field of IBD clinical research.
He is known for delivering timely, compassionate, and evidence-based medical care for his patients. Dr Croft’s engaging and honest approach to communication with patients, their families and referring healthcare providers ensures that his patients are fully informed during their treatment journey.
Anthony completed a medical degree at the University of Queensland and subsequently trained in hospitals throughout southeast Queensland in 2015-2016. He undertook an IBD Telehealth Fellowship at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in 2017, the same year he was awarded a Fellowship by the Australasian College of Physicians.
In 2018-2019 he undertook a Senior Clinical Fellowship at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, UK. At this centre of excellence, he received additional training in general gastroenterology, hepatology and inflammatory bowel disease. This included training in image enhanced colonoscopy for colorectal cancer detection and involvement in the clinical trial programme. Following this prestigious fellowship, he received additional training at the University Hospital Erlangen Medical Clinic in Germany.
Dr Croft has been engaged in gastrointestinal research since 2005. He was awarded a Master of Philosophy degree by the University of Queensland in 2019 for a thesis exploring risk prediction of clinical outcomes in acute ulcerative colitis. His research works have enabled improved access to PBS supported advanced therapies for Australian IBD patients and have been cited in clinical guidelines documents including a guideline for acute IBD patient care issued by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA).
He continues to be active in contributing to the medical literature, involved in key IBD clinical trials and in teaching the next generation of physicians through his academic appointment as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland.
He retains substantive public appointments at STARS and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospitals where he leads the commercial IBD clinical trials portfolio. With a focus on Phase 2 and 3 studies in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, selected patients can benefit from having early access to modern and novel IBD treatments.
